Who’s Coaching the Coach?

By Becki Noles

When you’re looking for a coach or if you’re a coach yourself – ask this question – if I want to help others grow, who’s helping ME… who’s helping the coach who wants to help me?

The fact of the matter is that coaches believe they themselves do not need coaching. (I myself have… 9 coaches who are on the lookout for me and who keep me in check!) And what’s going on here is coaches feel that just because they have learned how to help others grow and prosper and reach for the stars… they themselves don’t need coaching. But really, who’s helping the coach to reach for the stars… who’s really helping them because coaches need more coaching than anyone else on the planet!

So the reason for that is coaches have so much going on and they’ve used up so much mental energy in the coaching relationship with their clients, that by the end of the day or at the end of the week or the end of the month, they’re so pooped and so drained and so depleted that they need more re-energizing and more rejuvenation than anyone else!

So the reason why many coaches DO NOT hire coaches to coach themselves is because most coaches hate to admit that they need help!

It’s true. And there’s this particular dialogue going on, and I had it going on also… the dialogue that goes along the lines of …”I’m a bloody coach, I can coach myself, why do I need a coach to help me… it’s a waste of money for me.”

And it’s in the uttering of that last sentence to the inner self that pretty much relegates a coach to the bottom of the value chain because there’s a massive incongruency going on here.

And that incongruency is rooted in the fact that why should a coach pay for coaching… and that very coach is asking for someone else to invest in them for coaching! And so the inner conflict rages and the inner turmoil begins and the outer manifestations turn pretty ugly and it’s all rather horrible to witness.

Ego and fear and lofty attitudes are enemies of a dynamic effective coach. And it’s these very things that coaches are hired to help eradicate from their clients! So when a coach is so riddled and so deep and in so much chaos because their life is the antithesis of everything they want to have happen for their clients, then it’s only a matter of time before there’s a total and complete coach breakdown.

And when that happens, coaching then turns out to be nothing more than just another mediocre job. The coach turns out to be nothing more than a mediocre practitioner with mediocre thinking and mediocre living. Clients receive nothing more than a pretty standard viewpoint of life and of themselves. REAL breakthroughs and transformations for clients are a struggle and hard to come by.

So what’s missing here for the coach is… accountability. Accountability for what they’re up to and what they’re doing. And THIS is what changes EVERYTHING for the coach. It really does. And that’s because the whole accountability process keeps the coach ‘on track’ and keeps the creative process going. It keeps the flow of activity and momentum going.

What happens with most coaches is there’s no other sounding board to really show them how they’re really doing. And we’ve all been in that situation before because how many times have we had ideas and thoughts and strategies and we feel that it’s going to change the world and then, it all comes crashing down because just like slippery fish, the idea just dives back into the ocean of our environment and it’s lost. Lost forever.

Accountability. It’s VITAL for those coaches looking to excel.
