6 Tips for Finding a Virtual Assistant

By Becki Noles

When giving presentations about the Virtual Assistance industry, I am often asked, “How do I find a Virtual Assistant?” Here are the tips that I give.

1. Ask your colleagues for recommendations. Ask others you trust about who they use as a Virtual Assistant. Many times they will either refer you to theirs or to an organization (ie. VA Training, The Virtual Assistant Revolution, IVAA, VANA, etc.) that will help you locate a Virtual Assistant.

2. Do a Google search and check out Virtual Assistant websites. This may sound rudimentary, but one can learn a tremendous amount at a Virtual Assistant’s website. Look for certain “red flags” such as spelling and grammar errors, confusing wording and lack of testimonials. Their presence on the web is an indication of their image. If a Virtual Assistant cares little about their presentation and work, then it is a sure sign that they are not the ones to trust with your business.

3. Contact them personally by telephone. How is their phone voice? Do they use proper English? Consider this especially if you wish for them to conduct your correspondence. Keep in mind that no one can answer the phone each and every time, however you should be able to reach your Virtual Assistant consistently.

4. Find out what their niche is or what areas they have expertise. Do they coincide with what you need? If you are a coach are they a Virtual Assistant for coaches or if you are a Realtor does the Virtual Assistant specialize in real estate? It is easier on you and cheaper in the long run if you choose a Virtual Assistant who is an expert and specialist in your field.

5. Do you like their personality? Personality, at times, can have little to do with work performance, but remember, when dealing with a Virtual Assistant, you will be working closely together. It is important that you be able to get along in a professional manner.

6. Always ask for references and testimonials. Remember, Virtual Assistants are partnering with you and you deserve the best. Your Virtual Assistant should be a reflection of your business and personality.

It amazes me how many times I hear of people who didn’t think to use Google or their favourite search engine to search for a Virtual Assistant. Instead they take off to the freelance sites. Thanks for tips!

I’m so glad you mentioned virtual assistants. I am a VA and one of the things I stress to my clients is when you are freed from administrative tasks, you can do what you do best and not be mired in daily tasks that hold you back.

Kathie – Freelance sites have to be the WORST place for finding qualified virtual assistants. Good old fashioned Google and Yahoo are the places to go.

Christine – Thanks for the tip of the Publicity Hound. Joan is one great woman!
